My Funds Are Low After A Natural Disaster, What Do I Do About My Mortgage?

Bills

Faced with significant damage or loss of their homes, consumers sometimes overlook their on-going mortgage payments – or with so many new and unexpected expenses, can no longer afford to make those payments.  Consumers should immediately contact their mortgage lender or mortgage servicer to avoid defaulting on their loan and to avoid foreclosure.  Many institutions will allow a grace period during which the obligation to make mortgage payments is suspended.  If your mortgage is insured by the FHA (HUD) or VA, you may have additional protections.

FEMA operates a Disaster Housing Program that helps homeowners who have been forced out of their homes by disasters.  Disaster Home Repair Assistance is also available through FEMA which provides grants to homeowners for minor but necessary disaster-related repairs.  The FEMA Disaster Helpline can be reached at 1-800-621-3362.

If you are facing foreclosure, you may want to contact the Colorado Foreclosure Hotline for possible assistance as the Foreclosure Hotline is staffed with certified housing counselors and may be able to work with your lender directly. The Foreclosure Hotline can be reached at 1-877-601-HOPE (4673).
