While identity thieves historically have targeted individuals, business identity theft has been a growing industry for scammers and has been causing devastation to targeted businesses nationwide. Why? Thieves predominantly seize a company’s identification credentials in an attempt to gain access to credit in the business's name.
Once the information is acquired, these criminals often use the data to access lines of credit, purchase accounts, and credit cards to obtain commercial goods such as electronics, gift cards, equipment, and other items that can easily be bought and sold for cash. In other cases, criminals assume the identity of a business for other criminal purposes, such as money laundering, racketeering, or to manipulate state business registration and filing systems to gain control over a business.
The destruction inflicted from business identity theft can be overwhelming and cause expensive litigation, financial loss, and even potential bankruptcy. In an effort to protect your business from being victimized by identity theft, the Colorado Secretary of State has developed the Business Identity Theft Resource Center. Not only does the Center provide assistance to help protect your business, the guide also provides assistance to help your business recover from identity theft.
