Charitable organizations and paid charitable solicitors must register with the Colorado Secretary of State before engaging in fundraising activities in Colorado. Along with registration requirements, charities and paid solicitors are required to annually disclose financial statements to the state which enable donors to review how much of their donation actually goes to the cause along with the overall administration and management costs of the program.
Prior to giving, make sure to check out each charity with the Secretary of State’s Office, the IRS Select Check and web sites that evaluate charities, such as the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance and Charity Navigator. Don’t forget to conduct additional internet research and see what others are saying prior to donating to any cause.
